Iva Nenić, Troubling Critique: Hip-Hop as a Cultural Praxis
lecture

Recent analyses of rap music/hip-hop culture carried out in the fields of culture studies/ethnomusicology impose a crucial question: does hip-hop offer and perform a substantial social critique, or is it still repeating (and deepening) prejudices and stereotypes embedded in dominant patriarchal ideology? Interpretations of 'cases' coming from the cultures other than Afro-American show that rap's original paradigm is evolving in unpredicted ways. If we understand rap's subversive potential as a non-consistent challenge to social constructs of race/class/ethnicity (to the lesser degree, gender also), then, it is vital to understand dynamic relation of local hip-hop to the field of global popular culture, and why certain matters are at stake in local cultural context. Rap/hip-hop represents a field of social struggle where certain and powerful symbols of identity are repeated, changed or contested. Douglas Kellner claims that media culture creates new identities in such a way that it "replaces nationalism, religion, family and education as sources of identity". In the case of Serbian rap, we can say that this assumption is true to a degree, as Serbian rap scene frequently narrates a particular "modern" version of national identity that derives both from the older nationalist values and popular "ghetto" urban culture. Rap musician as a modern "singer of tales" in Serbia, often uses lyrics and speech formulas to celebrate national past, but also to mock the prevailing stereotypes of local "people's culture" or cultural values of recent history. Ivan Nenić wll discuss several examples of both global and local rap in order to demonstrate different (often antagonistic) positions that characterize hip-hop culture nowadays.
